Abstract

Nuclear power is a relatively new phenomenon. In the mid-twentieth century its impact on society was manifested in ali aspects of life including culture, and particularly film. The most notable film genre in which the fear of nuclear threat and its possible consequences on entire humanity dominated is the science fiction genre. If it is true that genuine art imitates rea! life, there is no place where this is more obvious than in art world of American film. In any form, every aspect of American culture was described in films, and represented in the second half of the last century on "big screen". Although nuclear power is in fact deeply rooted in economic and political institutions of American society, the threat of nuclear war or the use of nuclear weapons was often used for short term political aims during the period of intensive Cold War. Similar practice is used today by some other players on global political stage.
