SOCIAL NETWORKS AND INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION – STUDENTS’ ATTITUDES TOWARDS INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION IN DIGITAL ENVIRONMENT

Abstract
Development of information communication technologies, especially
internet, has enabled additional platforms for human communication
creating a new communication paradigm. Increased use of modern
technologies by young people influences dynamics, rules, conversation
interaction and situation context of interpersonal communication in
digital environment. The basic aim of the research was to examine attitudes
of the University of Mostar students towards the particularities of
interpersonal communication on social networks. Data were collected
through a survey questionnaire, created for the needs of this paper, on
a suitable sample of (N=96) students. The results indicate an increasing
trend of online interpersonal communication within this population
compared to face-to-face communication. The main reason for using social
networks is contact with friends and most students use WhatsApp
(47%). When coding messages in the online environment, students most
often use textual (68%) and voice messages (24%). As the main obstacles
for the efficient interpersonal communication on social networks,
the respondents stated a lack of non-verbal communication, inability to
properly express thoughts and feelings and inability to actively listen.
Based on the analysis of the collected data, the authors state that modern
communication patterns of young people are increasingly influenced by
new technologies. They also emphasize the importance of scientific approach
in the study of interpersonal communication in digital environment.
