Abstract
The authors discuss the issue of the common European security and defense policy, particularly regarding the future of US presence in Europe. Their assumption is that the fate of Europe after World War II was almost entirely (both security- and defense-wise) in the hands of USA. They think that in the last few years the conditions for designing and launching an independent European security and defense policy have been created, the policy which would not depend to such an extent on the foreign policy goals of American administrations. However, there are major setbacks and obstacles in this effort that all European states must be aware of.
