Abstract

The purpose of the paper is to present the state and perspective of amelioration drainage with an emphasis on subsoil pipe drainage systems on agricultural land in the Republic of Croatia using field, laboratory and statistical research conducted in the 2015 – 2019 period. The research was conducted in the counties, particularly the following five - the Osijek – Baranja, Vukovar – Srijem, Virovitica - Podravina, Sisak – Moslavina and Zagreb Counties, since they cover 129,893.70 ha or 78 % of drained agricultural land in the Republic of Croatia. The conducted research on the majority of drained agricultural land in Croatia observed poor state of surface open canal systems and poor to very poor state of subsoil pipe drainage systems, the causes being irregular maintenance, negligence and devastation of the systems. As a consequence, a high variability in the functionality of the systems was determined, i.e. a lack of efficient and timely draining of excess water from agricultural land. Further use of drained agricultural land in the Republic of Croatia (166,541.50 ha) for cultivation of agricultural crops and achievement of profitable agricultural production will require additional hydrotechnical and agro-amelioration corrective measures. The results presented in this paper are mostly taken from the monograph “Land drainage in Croatia” (Petošić, 2021)
