Abstract

The central focus of this paper is the migration motivation as one of the most important aspects of migration on a global and national level. This paper discusses the migration motivation through a prism of a number of prevalent theoretical concepts and models from the second half of the 20th century. Furthermore, it also focuses on the contemporary view from the perspective of the International Organization for Migration (IOM). Stemming from this theoretical and conceptual basis, an analysis of the migration motivation through historical waves of migration on a global level is provided, while taking into account the Croatian migration context, as well as the contemporary migration movements in the conditions occurring following the establishment of Croatia as an independent state.
