Abstract

Hypotonia in newborns and infants represents a diagnostic challenge for neonatologists and pediatricians, since it is a clinical symptom that points to benign as well as serious conditions. The differential diagnosis of neonatal and infant hypotonia is extensive, and a methodical approach helps in localizing the problem to a specific part of the nervous system and formulating a differential diagnosis. Establishing a diagnosis helps in planning treatment and informing parents about the prognosis. This review article presents a structured approach that emphasizes the initial assessment, examination, and management of the neonate and infant with generalized
hypotonia.
