Abstract

The article describes an important monument of Old Church Slavonic literature, dedicated to the interpretation of the liturgy, namely the translation of the Historia Ecclesiastica attributed to Patriarch Germanus. Issues related to the history of the Slavonic text, its localization and attribution to Bishop Konstantin of Preslav, as well as its correspondence to the Greek original are touched upon. An overview of all Slavic copies of the Skazanie cerkovnoe is given and its further fate in the East Slavonic manuscript tradition is described. On Russian soil the text underwent significant reductions and was then in this new form included in the compilation Tolkovaja služba, which in the 14th century became a separate chapter of the Russian Nomokanon (Kormchaya kniga). Until the reforms of Patriarch Nikon, this article was the main source on the symbolism of the service of the liturgy. Among the southern Slavs the Skazanie cerkovnoe was not widely used (only manuscripts from the 13th and 14th centuries have survived), its text has not been further copied.
