Abstract

The treatise On the letters is probably the most important text for the early history of (Old) Church Slavonic writing. It is obviously conceived as an apology of Slavonic writing and the use of Slavonic in church, especially for the translation of the Scriptures. Although rather short, it provides unique information about the original alphabet used to write Slavonic, viz. Glagolitic. Written in the 9th century in Glagolitic script, it is conserved in a large number of Cyrillic copies from the 14th to the 19th century. The text, due to its importance for the history of the Church Slavonic tradition, has attracted the interest of many scholars from the 19th to the 21th century. Several different classifications of the rich manuscript tradition have been proposed. The various solutions are presented as well as the desiderata for future research on the text.
