Abstract

Through an analysis of performative practices realized in the medium of photography, the article examines the peculiarities of artistic work of Claude Cahun. Her photographs, created by procedures of collage, double exposure and similar experiments, are the result of directing the camera at herself. The artist explores the myriad possibilities of who and what she can become, using a series of details as an amalgam of fictional elements and those that indicate a confrontation with reality. Thus, the focus shifts from how a photo (and what it depicts) looks towards what it does. These types of practices and the peculiarity of performance with the aim of examining and influencing personal, gender and female identity will also be considered on the example of the artist Bojana Komadina Barltrop’s self-published newspaper, along with an analysis of the performance of autobiography as an artistic strategy characteristic of both artists. Thirdly, an analysis of Goranka Matić’s series examines the performance of a desired identity through the process of lending voice to women filmed in the public space.
