Abstract

The site of Tor, an ancient tower on the island of Hvar in Dalmatia, has been the subject of several scholarly studies. However, many of them are controversial, and our understanding of the site’s functions and chronology remains incomplete, mainly due to of a lack of systematic excavations. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of what has been published or unpublished about the site in the last five centuries and re-examines all thus far proposed interpretations. It also analyses the architectural remains and other archaeological evidence found at Tor and discusses the questions that still need to be answered.

Keywords
