Abstract

In the Middle Ages, the town of Ulcinj fell victim to territorial claims of several different rulers of that time and from 1421 to 1571 became a part of Venetian dominion in the eastern Adriatic thus becoming a constituent part of the Albania Veneta province. After it fell under Ottoman rule in 1571, its ethnic, social and cultural picture changed and the history of its population can mostly be tracked via the data saved in the files of other archives.
This paper follows the Ulcinian migrations to Mleci in the late Middle Ages and early Modern Age using the existing historiographic data and original material from the Venetian archives (the State Archives, the archives of St. George and Tryphon’s brotherhood) and corresponding material from the State Archives in Zadar.
The time frame of the Ulcinian migrations into the town in the lagoons, numerical ratio in reference to immigrants from other towns in eastern Adriatic, their professional activities and domicile, agricultural possibilities and standard, relations with Venetian religious institutions (mostly with national brotherhoods) and spiritual persons and their everyday life in the circle of family, friends and their fellow countrymen was based mostly on the testamentary material of the emigrated Ulcinians. The analysis of the archival sources shows that the Ulcinians were - based on all aspects of their immigrations, life and activities in Venice - an integral part of numerically strong and socially respectable community of eastern Adriatic immigrants, mostly from the Croatian ethnic area of that time. Therefore, as mentioned in the concluding sections of the paper, it is necessary for Croatian historiography to – in the context of a comprehensive research of the history of eastern Adriatic – pay more attention to and produce more efficient results in researching both Ulcinj and its neighbouring towns and areas.
