Abstract
Continuous research, inquiry and learning represent the basis for improvement and development of contemporary business. Numerous authors and practitioners have confirmed that the learning organization concept is a paradigm for successful confrontation with changes, which can result in business excellence. In this paper, the learning organization concept is considered with regard to a set of principles or learning organization disciplines and their desired characteristics. However, the process of developing learning organizations is not possible without understanding the characteristics of the environment, especially the dominating value system in a specific society. The goal of this paper is to identify which cultural characteristics can support and sustain the development of the learning organization. Complementarity of cultural characteristics with the characteristics of the learning organization is analysed from the aspect of the Hofstede Model of cultural dimensions and from the perspective of the value systems of Confucianism and Hinduism. The purpose of this paper is to identify research propositions, which could be empirically examined in order to confirm which cultural dimensions could sustain the development of the learning organization.
