Abstract

This paper analyses the linguistic landscape of the
Zadar peninsula, starting from the assumption that
since the old town is a frequently visited tourist destination,
its linguistic landscape is driven by tourist
demand and affected by globalization. In order to
conduct this research, a corpus of 582 photographs
of public signs was collected between June and September
2019. The paper uses the quantitative approach
to examine a part of the mentioned corpus,
more precisely, 197 names of accommodation and
food service establishments. Approximately 54% of
the names are of foreign origin, predominantly English.
The frequent use of the English language in the
linguistic landscape of the Zadar historical centre
supports the generally accepted view of English as
a modern lingua franca. Standard Croatian and its
regional varieties are used in approximately 45% of
the names, except in the case of accommodation establishments,
where English is prevalent due to the
city’s orientation towards tourism.
