Abstract

In this article a theoretical background of the plastic hinge method in the analysis of framed structures is presented with the aim of establishing their critical load. The method is presented with an emphasis on the effects of material nonlinearity, where equations that in addition consider geometric nonlinearity are given without the preceding derivation. Material is assumed to be isotropic and linearly elastic – perfectly plastic. Practical application of this method is presented through numerically solved examples.

Keywords

framed structure; critical load; plastic hinge; plastic reduction matrix; yield surface
