Abstract

Roman literary academy Arcadia took Christmas as one of its main subjects. The child of Bethlehem was its patron and stable where he was born was considered to be - Arcadum tutela. Poets celebrated Jesus’ birth every December and their works were inspired by the great poets of the antiquity: Theocritus, Virgil, Tibullus, Propertius and Catullus. Baro Bošković, Arcadian from Dubrovnik, also dedicated many of his lines to Christmas. His elegies, although not directly connected with Christmas, show us Jesuit piety toward Jesus and Mary. In his eclogues Bošković was influenced by Virgil and Bošković’s epigrams also
contain elements of holy images.
