Abstract

The article attempts to explain the use of alphabetic letter t above the symbol clivis ( ) in St Gallen manuscripts. The use of alphabetic letters in St Gallen manuscripts has rythmical and melodious purpose, but it can also give special quality to certain notes. The letter t above clivis shows that the composer used it to give a particular quality to its first note. Even without letter t clivis can have various uses - oscillation ( clivis di oscillazione), anticipation ( clivis di
anticipazione) i melodical connection ( clivis di legame melodico). The article gives a comprehensive analysis of this problem and shows that letter t has an important semiotics function in St Gallen manuscripts.
