Abstract

By virtue, mostly, to its favorable geographical position and mild climate, but also to its rich cultural and natural heritage, the Republic of Croatia enjoys the status of an attractive tourist destination. In spite of this, numerous studies show that Croatian tourism is, to the greatest extent, “driven” exclusively by the sun and the sea, which in turn results in high seasonality and various problems arising from it. Solving the aforementioned problems is only possible with the cooperation and quality communication of all stakeholders in the destination and with professional and motivated leadership that follows tourism trends and continuously works on the sustainable development and improvement of the Republic of Croatia as a tourist destination. In this context, smart tourism is emerging as a potential direction for the development of Croatian tourism, which prioritizes the mutual cooperation of all stakeholders and smart management of the destination with the help of modern technologies. This paper describes the results of research with the help of which an attempt was made to determine the key stakeholders in the system of activities for the development and management of tourist destinations in the Republic of Croatia in the context of smart tourism, to what extent they cooperate with other stakeholders and how they perceive the problems and tensions that are present in the specified system of activities.
