Abstract

The text analyzes the work of the Ship Research Institute in Zagreb, which is currently in the process of liquidation, as well as its links with the economy, especially with the largest Croatian shipyards. Since the establishment of that institution, a scientific approach to shipbuilding,
which was a strong and recognizable export sector in Yugoslavia, has been developed. This paper underlines and interprets the contradiction of the current moment, namely that the STEM range of sciences is strongly privileged while, at the same time, an important scientific
and production sector is being neglected and extinguished. This “paradox of Croatian shipbuilding” is very well illustrated by the example of the Shipping Institute, an institution that survives solely thanks to the persistence of a few employees.
