Abstract
The Plitvice Lakes National Park has been officially a special and globally recognized karst phenomenon for seventy years. However, there is a long-term problem of inadequate drainage and waste water disposal. It is particularly visible and actualized near the village of Rastovača, where waste water is discharged into the karst underground directly through a sinkhole that serves as an absorption pit. Considering the specifics and complexity of the karst structure and properties, this represents a potential environmental problem and a possible threat to the system because it is III. drinking water source protection zone. The issue of wastewater treatment in the area of Plitvička Jezera National Park and associated settlements was temporarily resolved by installing a portable wastewater treatment device in 2018, but a permanent solution is not yet in sight. There is an announced EU agglomeration project that can be implemented by 2023, but it is a matter of time whether and how it will be implemented.
