Attitudes of the local population on the globalization of tourism and apartmentisation on the example of the city of Dubrovnik

Abstract
Globalization is a process that significantly affects all aspects of modern life, including the
economic sector of tourism, which is particularly important for the population of major
tourist destinations. This paper presents preliminary research results conducted during
May and June of 2023 on a convenience sample of 72 respondents from the city of Dubrovnik
and neighbouring municipalities. The research aimed to examine respondents’ attitudes
toward key manifestations of globalization in the field of tourism, which impact the
quality of life of the local population, such as apartment construction, limited housing solutions, cost-effectiveness, and the implementation of sustainable development policies. For
the purposes of the research, a questionnaire consisting of 33 questions was developed. The
anonymous questionnaire, created using Google Forms, was disseminated online. Through
a five-point Likert scale, the respondents expressed positive attitudes toward the increase
in tourist activities and the economic benefits that accompany them. However, they also
expressed negative views on the uncontrolled increase in the number of new apartments,
the availability and affordability of housing, while some respondents expressed dissatisfaction
with the role of the local government and the City of Dubrovnik Tourist Board in creating
and shaping effective tools for adjusting and revising tax policies, spatial planning, etc.
The paper also outlines research limitations, based on which a revision of the questionnaire
is planned along with its application on a representative sample of respondents.
