Abstract

The paper presents the relationship between economics and engineering, with regard to the construction of a digital twin, which imitates a real physical product / system with a certain degree of similarity of characteristics during different phases of the life cycle. The relationship between economics and engineering is described through three paradigms. A complete comparative view of digital twins in economics and engineering is given through eight distinguishing dimensions and two criteria: characteristics and exclusivity. The comparative view points to the analogy of digital twins in economics and engineering, which explains the entry of engineers into the field of market design, in accordance with one of the described paradigms. The benefits of using a digital twin in the optimization of business processes for modern companies facing challenges in the global market and the growing complexity of the environment are presented. A digital twin, with real-time data, enables timely sharing of information about resources, supply chain, products, processes, customer relationships, and failure prevention and risk minimization through actionable simulations. The method of building a digital twin is explained.
