Abstract

The trend in design orientation in current applications and the resulting requirements will be discussed in this paper. With this trend in mind, the discussion is focused on appropriate finite element selection regarding the type of element and the polynomial degree of the basic shape function. There will be a special look at bending load case and shear influence. The quality of results using different 3D finite elements is compared and tested for practical use. Recommendations for designers concerning these fields are provided. The drawn conclusions are applied to real-life design parts and the advantages of this procedure for design-oriented FEA are shown.
