Abstract

The local linear scale factor k for normal aspect conic projections is a function of the geodetic, or geographic latitude φ. Contrary to claims from the literature, this function does not have to have any, but can have one or more local minima. Furthermore, the expressions leading to the local minimum of the function k are regularly derived in the literature for certain conic projections. In contrast to such an approach, this article derives expressions that are independent of the type of conic projection and can be applied to any conic projection: conformal, equivalent, equidistant, perspective or some other.
