Abstract

Purpose. The rich collection of Osijek newspapers of the Museum of Slavonia collects Osijek daily and weekly newspapers from 1848 to the present day, and in its collection, it also keeps complete years of Hrvatski list, the Osijek daily newspaper published from 1920 to 1945. The aim of the paper is to point out the exceptional value of Hrvatski list, a daily newspaper that marked the period between the two wars in Osijek, which represents an important source for studying the history of Osijek and Slavonia of that era.
Approach/methodology/design. The paper presents a brief history of Osijek journalism from its beginnings in the middle of the 19th century to the last Osijek daily newspaper, Glas Slavonia. The point is on Hrvatski list, its publishing policy, editors, topics it covers and the historical context in which it appears.
Results. Newspaper sources are valuable and sometimes the only source for research, especially local history. The rich newspaper materials of the Museum of Slavonia are an exceptional treasure of that shows daily life in Osijek from the middle of the 19th century to the present day. Hrvatski list is a valuable source of the historical story of Osijek and Slavonia due to the length of its publication, quality texts and valid editorial policy. With the exhibition entitled 100 years of Hrvatski list – from List to Glas, we pointed out the importance and value of Hrvatski list, as well as the long-standing stigma and oblivion during the past decades.
Social significance. The social significance is evident in the detailed analysis of Hrvatski List, which is extremely important for the study of local history. The important period of the Osijek and Slavonian interwar, political, social, economic, and cultural changes are permanently recorded on the pages of Hrvatski list.
Orginality/value. The work is a contribution to the unfortunately few sources on the history of newspapers in our country, especially the period between the two world wars. After a decade of stigma, Hrvatski list is available to numerous researchers, and its role in the historical interpretation of Osijek and Slavonia is truly indisputable.
