Abstract
Purpose. Paper describes findings from a study which aimed to assess the ownership of
LGBTIQ books in public libraries in Osijek-Baranya county.
Approach/methodology/design. The study used check-list method and compared
catalog records in 10 public libraries in Osijek-Baranya county with the list of 86 LGBTIQ
titles.
Findings. Although not one library holds all studied LGBTIQ titles, two libraries have 50%
or more titles from the list. Despite some deviations, the number of titles in the collections
tends to grow with the size of the library. The biggest library has the largest average
number of copies.
Practical implications. Findings indicate strong and weak points of library collections
and can motivate and support librarians in making decisions about purchasing LGBTIQ
books.
Social implications. Since LGBTIQ population in Croatia is still to certain extent
discriminated and underserved by libraries, inclusive public libraries' collections could
support the development of their positive perception in local community and they could
become places where LGBTIQ populations find information required in their everyday
life.
Originality/value. This is the first study to investigate LGBTIQ collections in public
libraries in Osijek-Baranya county.
