Abstract

Planning is the foundation of every successful business and the long-term development of a company. The operational plan is a tool used to identify and consider better, more efficient forms of business and communication. It represents a short-term outline that attempts to predict business risks that will affect business results. Accommodation companies often face planning challenges due to the volatility of the tourism market, weather conditions, and labor shortages. Positive trends in the development of continental tourism are being observed in northwestern Croatia, which is reflected in the subject of research in this paper. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate the extent to which operational planning impacts the overall business of companies in the accommodation sector in northwestern Croatia, and to explain in detail all the factors that a company must consider and investigate when creating an operational plan. The primary qualitative empirical research revealed a relatively weak representation of operational planning in the selected sample of companies. This finding underscores the need for additional education and empowerment of stakeholders in tourism regarding the potential benefits of planning for ongoing operations, as well as the creation of plans for applying to tenders for European Union funds.
