Abstract

There are different approaches, procedures and thoughts regarding the issue
of organ teaching, and what are the conditions necessary for the quality of its successful implementation. Accordingly, the question arises - When is the appropriate time
to start teaching this instrument? In this paper, an attempt will be made to contribute
to the clarification of the issue in question through the analysis and interpretation
of different approaches and practices of teachers through documentation and empirical research. This research will express the opinions of teachers who teach the
organ in music schools of the Republic of Croatia, and how music pedagogues write
about certain topics and issues in scientific publications. Based on the studied literature and conducted empirical research, we can conclude that prior piano knowledge
is necessary so that organ techniques and skills can be adopted more easily and successfully, so accordingly, middle school is the most productive time to learn the organ.
Admittedly, there are cases in history where talent, circumstance and perseverance
resulted in success. However, it is still indisputable that (prior) knowledge of the piano
improves the success and thus the quality of organ lessons. Furthermore, the piano
knowledge that the student will ˝bring/input˝ into high school organ lessons will help
in more successfully building his knowledge and skills necessary for mastering this
complex instrument.
