Abstract

In this paper the authors provide an overview of educational opportunities in Osijek in the second half of the 19th century, when Tadija Smičiklas, as a grammar school student with completed state matura exam, taught history at the Great Royal Grammar School in the school year 1863/1864. It is the time of the implementation of the so-called new principles of schooling – the so-called Draft for the organization of grammar schools and vocational schools and the establishment of Osijek’s Great Grammar School. In the central part of the paper the authors give an overview of Smičiklas’ short life period in Osijek, mentioning the professors at the Osijek Grammar School and his contemporaries. In the final part of the paper the authors emphasize the special contribution of Tadija Smičiklas in the beginnings of the development of Croatian historiography, emphasizing the lesser-known brief period of his activity in Osijek.
