Abstract

Common bean landraces (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) have different resistance to low temperatures, which is reflected in their germination, growth and yield. These differences are crucial for the selection of suitable landraces for specific environmental conditions. Desirable characteristics include fast and uniform germination and rapid emergence, even at low temperatures, which ensures better adaptation of the plant and a more stable yield under different climatic conditions. The optimum temperature for germination and emergence of beans is between 18 and 22 °C, while the minimum temperature for germination is 8 °C, at which the seeds germinate slowly. For this reason, beans are usually sown in late April or early May, resulting in flowering in midsummer when temperatures and drought are at their highest, which can lead to aborted flowers and pods and reduce yield. The aim of this work was to determine the influence of seed treatments with biostimulants on the germination parameters of seeds of two common bean landraces ('Trešnjevac' and 'Biser') at low temperatures. Earlier germination of the common bean at lower temperatures would allow earlier sowing and thus earlier flowering and pod formation, which could avoid unfavourable conditions such as high summer temperatures and drought. In the laboratory experiment, the influence of temperatures of 10, 15 and 20 °C on the germination of common bean seeds prepared with the biostimulants Eco Green, Exelgrow and Organico was tested. The biostimulants were useful for the cultivar 'Trešnjevac' at temperatures of 15 °C and 20 °C, while they had no effect at a temperature of 10 °C, i.e. it was found that low temperatures are not suitable for the germination of this cultivar. On the other hand, biostimulants had a negative effect on the germination of cultivar 'Biser' at all temperatures, with the exception the biostimulant Exelgrow, which contributed to a higher percentage of germinated seeds and faster seed germination at a temperature of 10 °C.
