Summary: Preventive conservation of books/archival materials from the library in the Monastery of St. Mary at Glavotok
Abstract
Numerous libraries in the Republic of Croatia had been neglected for many years, and no reason need be sought. It is as though awareness of the value and wealth preserved in them has been lost. However, matters are changing for the better, and now the major task ahead is to make up for lost time… The preventive conservation of books and archival materials is exceptionally important. When it is conducted, the condition of the materials is revealed and mechanical, physical/chemical and biological damages (insects and wormholes, active moulds, etc.) are ascertained. This includes mechanical cleaning processes on all pages of book volumes, dusting, disinfection, preservation of covers, fitting units in exceptionally poor condition with protective covers, etc. Preventive conservation of books and archival materials in the monastic library in Glavotok has been fully conducted, and now comprehensive conservation and restoration works will follow on the most valuable and most damaged books and archival materials.
