Transfer and storage of materials of the parish archives to the Archives of the Archdiocese of Zadar

Abstract

This paper follows the action of transferring, storing and organizing the holdings of the parish archives of the Zadar Archdiocese. The campaign was supposed to take over older non-operational material of parish archives primarily from island parishes that were kept in inappropriate conditions. With this campaign, the archival holdings of 23 parish archives was retrieved, where all together 391 boxes/ bundles and 672 books and booklets were retrieved, in total 39.95 meters of archival material. The primary goal of this action was to take over the holdings of the parishes to the central archive of the archdiocese and to preserve and arrange them. Once the material has been taken over, it is arranged at least on a basic level, and later it should be arranged summarily with a mandatory inventory. The benefits of keeping archival material of parishes in the central archive of the archdiocese are multiple, such as preservation in better microclimatic conditions, the material is better organized and available to researchers in one place. That is why this approach to taking care of parish archives is the best and highest quality way of preserving them.
