Abstract

Sustainable land use is becoming the basic requirement of today's society, and its implementation, especially in protected natural areas, is the imperative. Areas that are protected because of their natural values are a form of spatial standards which have a direct influence on spatial planning and development. Protecting its basic phenomenon, the developments of other activities (agriculture, forestry…) within the landscape area are limited. Landscape planning offers instruments that allow development planning of different activities technical disciplines based on „sustainable use“ of natural resources, which is very important in natural reserve areas. Optimisation of methods developed in landscape planning includes multicriterial spatial analysis (attractiveness, vulnerability, suitability) which, together with the use of modern geographic information technologies (GIS technology), has greately improved transparency of a planning procedure and consequently the decision making process. In this research we have used optimisation method in spatial evaluation of Nature Reserve Telašćica area for agriculture (olive trees and vineyards). Special accent has been put on pedological characteristics as basic resource for agricultural production, and they have been evaluated for olive trees and vineyard production. After the environmental protective analysis of the areas whose qualities would be endangered by proposed agricultural activities, had been done, the optimisation method was applied using suitability analysis. Achieved results show areas suitable for proposed agricultural activities are attractive for production and at the same time have the least possible environmental impact. The development measures for planned activities in Nature Reserve Telašćica have been formulated.
