Distribution of brucellosis in the Republic of Croatia with an overview of the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Abstract

Authors describe the distribution of brucellosis in domestic animals and humans in the Republic of Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. During research (1990 –2007) in Croatia positive serological reactions to brucellosis were found in 7 (0,002 %) cattle, 478 (0,5 %) goats, 687 (0,3 %) sheep, 2040 (0,4 %) pigs and 73 humans (0,05 %). Out of the total number of animals tested in Bosnia and Herzegovina during 2007, positive reactions were defined in 2,9% animals. Also, the majority of patients came from the Una-Sana Canton. B. melitensis was isolated from 20 (54,1 %) goat and 4 (50 %) sheep samples. B. ovis was isolated and identified from 10 (8,8 %) sheep and 25 (21,7 %) ram samples. B. suis was isolated from 109 (40,2 %) samples originating from pigs: 107 (98,2%) biovar 2 and only 2 (1,8 %) biovar 3 isolates (1,8 %). B. melitensis biovar 3 dominated in the Republic of Croatia, whereas only two isolates originating from Bosnia and Herzegovina were identified as the same biovar. Based on multiannual control, it can be concluded that Croatia has a favourable situation according to human infection with B. melitensis, however, there is a permanent threat of infectious agent input from Bosnia and Herzegovina, which was the case during the last epizooty/epidemy in the County of Split-Dalmatia and County of Dubrovnik-Neretva. Infection of animals with other types of Brucella is proved. Disease control is still necessary.
