Historical idea of the lifelong education of teachers in Germany

Abstract
The paper shows, based on the source analysis, that the demand for teachers' lifelong learning or conviction about its necessity has been present since the beginning of institutionalised teacher training. The system of argumentation of its necessity, its relation to the initial teacher training and supported methods of its realisation are analysed. It is indicated where in the solutions of that time the possible impulses for the consideration and practice of today’s life-long learning lie. The analysis comprises the works of four German pedagogues who were active in the first half of the 19th century – Diesterweg, Wander, Harnisch and Dinter. The attention is directed to the unorganised, individual forms of lifelong teacher education and training which, along with the institutionalised forms of their lifelong learning and training, witness about the early existence of the plurality of lifelong educational contexts.
