Croatian Primary Education after World War Two

Abstract

In the 1945–1990 period Croatia was relatively independent but the Communist Party had a great infl uence upon education as “... indispensable part of revolution”. Ideology and politics were the main characteristics of school in that time. In Croatia and world–wide as well experts were trying to find other solutions to student–school issues: primary schools were created to last longer, from four to seven and finally eight years. Till 1945 Croatia had four–year compulsory education. Starting from
1945 primary schooling may be divided into four periods:
1945–1950: post–war and reconstruction
1950–1960: preparing for longer compulsory education
1960–1980: uniform eight–year compulsory co–education
1980–1990: state education policy focused on secondary education.
