Abstract

We analyzed 97 facade walls on 58 multi-storey blocks of flats built in Zagreb in the last twenty years. The walls were classified according to section and the material used, and two of their major characteristics were investigated: thermaltechnical and economis.
The values obtained were quantified and graded, and rank-lists were made for evety characteristic separately, and for all of them together, showing the total measurable qualities. The research results showed that (a) a multi-layersection is desirable for all construction materials, including siporex, (b) the advantages of masonty as a construction material for non-bearing extemal walls were not sufficiently used, especially in the case of STIBO-blocks, (c) increasing the isolation properties of the section shouid be encouraged because this raises costs vety litle, (d) it would be economical andraise the quality of facade walls toi ncrease the assortment of prefabricated facade elements, so-called open prefabrication, making large series in various sizes, and especially in various widths.
