Abstract

The article deals with an aspect of metrology rarely analyzed, important not only in economic history but, due to morphology (hollow stone measures), in the history of culture, as well. It shows the development of measures among ancient oriental peoples as a part of their culture, philosophy and an important factor in their lives. lt also shows the development of measures in the classical world of Greece and Rome, in whose activities and life their system of measures had great Importance. The development of measures in medieval Europe and modern times is also presented. Studying the history of metrology provides deeper understanding od economic life, and the use of modern computers will considerably modify methods of research into the history of metrology and history in general.
