Abstract
This paper focuses on the dating, circulation, and chronological
as well as statistical analysis of numismatic finds from the Sipar
archaeological site. The site has been systematically investigated
on two occasions: in the first half of the 1960s, and the current
excavation campaign launched in 2013 and continuing to the
present day. To date the excavation has seen the recovery of 111
coins. The majority of these were recovered as surface finds during
site fieldwork. Only 25 coins were recovered from cultural layers,
making the stratigraphic analysis particularly significant. The
dating of these finds covers a broad time span, from the Roman
Republic to the modern period. Republican denarii stand out
in terms of quantity, bearing witness to the Romanisation and
monetisation of the Istrian peninsula. The context in which they
were discovered indicates the intensity of monetary circulation in
the commercial and social interactions in this area. In correlation
with other artefacts, the discovered coins provide compelling insight
into the settlement dynamics and the chronological reconstruction
of the past function of archaeological features, i.e., the multilayered
architectural remains on the Sipar headland.
