The Verafels Memorial Plaque in the Cultural and Historical Context of Lovran: Vera Nierroth and Aristocratic Tourism

Abstract
The paper investigates the Verafels plaque, whose meaning has hitherto remained unidentified, as part of Lovran’s monumental heritage. Based on the conducted research, it has been established that the name refers to the site where the Verafels memorial plaque was installed in honor of Vera Nierroth (1874–1920), a member of a Russian noble family. An analysis of periodical publications suggests that the plaque is associated with the work of Carl Seidl (1858–1936), who designed the “Verafels” inscription. The study draws on multiple historical sources, primarily periodicals, which mention Lovran and Verafels. The first known reference to Verafels was published in 1893 in the journal Hygiea, in an article depicting the social life of Lovran and the role of Villa Lovrana. This journal is also generally a valuable historical source for the study of Lovran and Opatija. Verafels was later mentioned in the journal Moderne illustrierte Zeitung für Reise und Sport (1911) and in the newspaper Linzer Tages-Post (1912), while members of the Russian aristocratic Nierroth family were also cited in the Opatija Cur-Liste of 1896.
