Abstract

The present study describes the development of a self-report
measure of coping with school failure for elementary school children.
In the pilot study a list of 56 items was collected on a sample
of 75 subjects aged from 9 to 14. The items were administered
to 275 elementary school students of the same age (139 girls and
136 boys). Factor analysis of the data produced five coping strategies:
Solving problems, Emotional reactions, Forgetting, Seeking
social support and Self-blame. Internal consistencies were in the
0.61 to 0.78 range. Significant age and gender differences were
found for almost all coping strategies. Differences were also found
between high and low-achieving students, students with high and
low self-esteem and students with high and low levels of anxiety.
Possible theoretical and practical implications of the results were
also discussed.
