Abstract

Adolescent mental health is taken to be one of the most intricate public health challenges of our time. Adolescence is a critical period in neurobiological and psychosocial development, which is why first incidences of mental disorders are so prevalent in this period in life. Over the course of the past decade in Europe and around the world, there has been a major rise in mental disorders among adolescents. Prompt identification, early diagnosis and treatment are vital to decreasing long-term psychiatric morbidity. Positive developments in adolescent mental health require greater social activation and interventions as part of primary prevention. This paper provides a brief overview of epidemiological data on adolescent mental health, guidelines to identifying mental disorders in young people, and a concise outline of the possibilities of psychiatric treatment of minors in Croatia.
