Abstract

This work aimed to describe the production technology that provides favourable conditions for obtaining high yields of poppy seeds intended for human consumption, while adhering to European Union recommendations for good practices to prevent and reduce the presence of opium alkaloids in poppy seeds and poppy seed products. Poppy seeds are rich in oil and contain a high proportion of polyunsaturated fatty acids, which, together with their unique nutritional composition, make them suitable for human consumption. To achieve high yields, it is essential to implement all agronomic practices properly and on time. In addition to achieving high seed yields, it is also important to ensure the quality and safety of the seeds. Due to the presence of alkaloids in capsules, poppy seed cultivation is strictly regulated and requires specific practices to prevent contamination of the seeds with alkaloids. During production, particular attention must be paid to the selection of variety, protection of crops against diseases and pests that contribute to seed contamination, adjustment of the harvester, and cleaning and processing of the seed after harvesting.
