Abstract
Artificial intelligence applications can substantially improve the scope and efficiency of information retrieval in university libraries through semantic search, chatbots, and personalized recommendations. Nevertheless, their impact on cataloging workflows remains limited due to persistent accuracy issues that necessitate continuous human oversight. Moreover, the implementation of these technologies in both information retrieval and cataloging progresses at a slower pace than their theoretical potential suggests, primarily because of challenges related to infrastructure, funding, workforce competencies, and governance. This study first conducts a bibliometric analysis to evaluate the current situation of artificial intelligence adoption in university libraries confronted with enduring challenges, focusing on publication trends and geographic and subject-area distributions. Based on these findings a mini-review is presented that closely scrutinizes 34 selected publications indexed by Scopus. These sources are of different study designs, settings and methods and collectively investigate the transformation of information retrieval and cataloguing processes in university libraries by artificial intelligence.
