Abstract

The paper contains an analysis of the rainfall regime on Mljet Island based on daily rainfall data from the Goveđari, Babino Polje and Maranovići hydrological stations. The data originate from the 1981–2024 period, and the analyses have been conducted at annual, monthly and daily time scales. Trends have been determined using the linear regression method, Mann–Kendall test and Sen's slope, while the regime changes have been analyzed using the RAPS method. The results indicate a general increase in the annual rainfall, which is statistically significant at the Babino Polje and Maranovići stations, with a simultaneous regime change after 2004. The analysis at the monthly scale shows that the trends are seasonal, primarily occurring in the cold part of the year, while a high natural variability with no statistically significant changes dominates most months. Extreme rainfall shows a marked spatial heterogeneity and weak mutual connection among the stations, indicating the dominance of local and stochastic processes. A statistically significant increase in maximum daily rainfall has been determined only at the Maranovići station, suggesting a spatially selective intensification of extreme rainfall events. The results confirm a strong impact of the regional climate change and local geomorphological factors interactions on the rainfall regime of small Mediterranean islands.
