Abstract

This article analyses the portrait oeuvre of Giovanni Simonetti, the most prominent painter from Rijeka in the 19th century, a close associate of Bishop Josip Juraj Strossmayer, and an important intermediary in the acquisition of artworks for the Gallery of Old Masters in Zagreb. The study presents key portraits created between the 1830s and 1870s, situating them within a broader social and stylistic framework, with a particular focus on verifying attributions and refining the chronology of the artist’s work. Special attention is given to the recently identified Portrait of Emilia Roncati Trombini from the Museo Correr collection in Venice, a work held in the Museum since 1928 but previously unrecognized within Croatian art historical scholarship.
