Abstract

The work of Viennese painter Friedrich Sturm in Slavonia (1850–1852/1853) is examined in the light of Josip Juraj Strossmayer’s early patronage. During his brief stay in Đakovo, he produced several works that reflect a synthesis of the Viennese academic tradition, Biedermeier, and Romanticism. Although marginalized in historiography, Sturm’s oeuvre testifies to the vibrant cultural and artistic connections between Vienna and Slavonia in the mid-nineteenth century.
