Abstract
This paper analyzes benchmarking as a systematic managerial instrument for learning and detecting
performance deviations, with a special emphasis on its application in tourism. The paper starts with a
theoretical framework, defining the concept, historical development, and typologies of benchmarking.
The central part explores the application of benchmarking in the tourism sector through an overview
of key performance indicators (KPIs). As an empirical case study, the paper presents a benchmarking
analysis of Šibenik-Knin County compared to competitive destinations, focusing on the occupancy
of accommodation capacities. The results indicate the existence of a performance gap, whereby
benchmarking confirms its role as a tool for identifying issues and setting guidelines for further
research. It is concluded that benchmarking provides an objective basis for understanding market
position and indicates the need for the implementation of strategic measures aimed at strengthening
regional competitiveness.
