The concept of introducing STEM into the educational process through the case study of the I-STEM project

Abstract
This paper presents a professional concept for introducing STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering,
and Mathematics) into the educational process developed through the I-STEM – Synergy for the
Development of STEM in Istrian county. STEM refers to an educational and professional approach
that integrates science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, emphasising practical learning,
research, problem-solving, and the development of new technologies. The paper starts from the need
to design a sustainable, interdisciplinary and inclusive model of STEM popularization that connects
higher education, schools, organizations and the local community. Based on the experience gained
during the first year of project implementation, the paper develops a concept consisting of four
interconnected components: capacity building of teachers and coordinators through targeted training,
individualized mentoring in the preparation and implementation of activities, the use of experiential
and problem-based workshops, and STEM dissemination through public events. Special attention is
given to adapting activities to different age groups, working with gifted children, including children
with developmental difficulties, and connecting STEM with the objectives of the green and digital
transition. The I-STEM project is presented as a case study demonstrating how project activities can
be transformed into a transferable professional model applicable in educational institutions and
local STEM “ecosystems”.
