Abstract
This paper highlights the importance of orienting residential spaces according to the cardinal directions. It emphasizes the significance of designing family houses with respect to the changing angle of solar radiation throughout the year. The study defines the functional areas of the residential space and the advantages of solar exposure – the angle at which sunlight enters individual rooms. The orientation of rooms depends on their intended use and function. The paper also addresses solar protection according to orientation, whether through natural measures (planting suitable greenery) or artificial solutions (installing appropriate elements in the correct positions on the building). The focus is on detached family houses in our region, specifically within the geographical latitude and longitude of the Republic of Croatia, regardless of whether they are located in the continental or coastal parts of the country.
