Ecosocialism in Three Simple Theses

Abstract
This paper provides an overview of ecosocialism. This view of the multiple and intertwined crises facing the world is based on a rejection of economic growth as the primary imperative of societies. Instead, ecosocialism advocates a slower “metabolism” which would be in harmony with the natural processes of the planet that make life possible for both humans and other living beings. Ecosocialism offers a relatively well-rounded utopia that includes, in addition to the energy transition, more redistribution, democracy and decentralization, more social security, free time, solidarity, common goods, as well as more organic and local agriculture. The paper is based on three relatively simple theses that give insight into the ecosocialist perspective: (1) that, compared to alternatives, ecosocialism offers a more attractive vision of the future society; (2) that inequality and the climate crisis are problems that need to be solved together, and (3) that private capital cannot make the transition to renewable energy sources fast enough.
